What the Sawmill Does

The sawmill is a factory building that converts raw logs into planks for higher-value sales. Forestry in Farming and Friends starts with chainsaws or the TK500 harvester, tree seeds from LumberCo or WoodNStuff, and eventually connects to cocoa logging and large haul logistics. The sawmill sits at the end of that chain — logs in, planks out, sold at lumber buy stations or the one-stop sell point.

The sawmill was added in a major update alongside revised log visuals and Goals-gated unlock requirements. You cannot buy or place the sawmill until you complete specific tasks in the Goals progression chain, including cocoa harvest and chocolate milk production milestones.

How to Unlock the Sawmill License

Open the Goals menu and locate the sawmill branch on the Farming or connected track — the chain requires approximately 14,400 XP and linked tasks such as harvesting one hundred cocoa pods and producing four chocolate milk jugs. Task order appears as connected nodes; complete each node before the sawmill license unlocks.

Prepare before accepting the chain: have cocoa rows planted, cows milking, and the Chocolate Milk Factory built or nearly built. Players who activate sawmill goals without factory infrastructure stall for hours. If you lack cocoa yet, finish forestry and cow Goals first, then return to the sawmill slot.

Getting Logs for the Sawmill

Cut trees with a chainsaw from WoodNStuff or use the TK500 for larger operations. Cocoa tree harvests also drop logs you can stockpile while collecting pods with the Oxbo. Logs come in sizes — small, medium, and large — with different plank yields at the sawmill. The 2026 update changed log appearance; older screenshots may not match current models.

Use wood trailers to haul logs from forest rows to the sawmill input. Keep log piles near the sawmill pad but not blocking vehicle paths. Mixed forestry and cocoa rows are common on optimized farms because one Oxbo pass feeds both pod Goals and log inventory.

Operating the Sawmill

Place the sawmill on your farm after unlocking the license — purchase from the build menu like other factories. Load logs into the sawmill input zone according to on-screen prompts. Start processing and collect planks from the output side. Load planks onto trailers and sell at LumberCo, WoodNStuff sell points, or the central one-stop sell location.

Batch processing saves time: gather a full wood trailer of logs, run one sawmill session, then make a single sell trip to town. Pair sawmill runs with chocolate milk production loops since both share cocoa row maintenance and Goals overlap.

Profit and Integration Tips

Sawmill income supplements cocoa and chocolate milk rather than replacing them. Plank prices fluctuate like crops — watch sell indicators before unloading full trailers. On co-op farms, assign one player to forestry passes while another handles factory lever sequences.

Do not neglect Goals counters while focusing on planks — if your active slot still tracks chocolate milk jugs, complete those before converting all cocoa into raw pod sales or unrelated products.
